Thermal power plants

The thermal power plants are the priority ones in the electricity system of Macedonia. They generate 81% of the total quantity of electricity produced by AD ELEM. The largest thermal power facility is REK Bitola, with its three blocks Bitola 1, 2 and 3, producing net average of 4,400GWh per year. Coal is the basic fuel at REK Bitola. The thermal power system in the Republic of Macedonia also includes REK Oslomej, with an installed capacity of the block of 125 MW and an average annual net production of 500 GW. Coal is the main fuel at REK Oslomej as well.

Hydro power plants

The total installed capacity of the hydro power plants is 547 MW or 40% of the total capacities of AD ELEM. There are eight hydro power plants in AD ELEM, of which two –Raven and Vrben – are run-of-the-river plants and six – Vrutok, Shpilje, Globochica, Tikvesh, Kozjak and Sveta Petka – are accumulation ones.
Of the total production of electricity at AD ELEM, about 18% is generated by hydro-production, mainly to satisfy the daily variations in the consumption of electricity and to provide the system services for regulation, thus achieving higher flexibility and availability of the electricity system.
